BNB Smart Chain Slashes Finality to 0.65 Seconds, 70x Faster Than 2022

BNB Smart Chain has reached a new speed milestone, with transaction finality now clocking in at 0.65 seconds. That’s a 70-fold improvement over the 45-second finality the network delivered in 2022, according to the blockchain’s developers.

What the speed boost means for users

Finality is the moment a transaction is confirmed and cannot be reversed. For decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms, payment systems, and cross-chain transfers, shorter finality means faster settlements and less waiting. A trade that once took nearly a minute to finalize now completes in under a second.

The upgrade targets the kind of latency that has historically made blockchain slower than traditional payment rails. At 0.65 seconds, BNB Smart Chain’s finality is now competitive with many centralized payment networks.

From 45 seconds to under one second

The network’s previous 45-second finality, which was standard two years ago, limited the user experience for time-sensitive applications. The latest improvement comes from changes to the chain’s consensus mechanism, though the developers have not released full technical details of the upgrade.

The faster finality is expected to reduce the risk of front-running and failed transactions, two common headaches for DeFi traders. It also makes cross-chain bridges more efficient because messages between blockchains can be confirmed faster.

Payment providers building on BNB Smart Chain can now offer near-instant confirmation to merchants and customers. For DeFi protocols, lending, borrowing, and liquidations can happen in real time rather than in batches.

The upgrade is already live on the network. Developers building applications on BNB Smart Chain can start taking advantage of the lower latency immediately without any changes to their code, since the improvement happens at the consensus level.

Whether the speed boost will attract new users or projects remains an open question, but for now, the chain is running at a pace that rivals some of the fastest Ethereum Virtual Machine-compatible networks.
