EigenLayer is weighing a draft proposal that would give restakers a one-way door out of the protocol. The framework, called RETIRE — short for Retirement Enabling Terminal, Irreversible Restaking Exit — is outlined in ELIP-018. It hasn't been approved or implemented yet, and the EigenLayer DAO is still debating whether the idea makes sense.
Why exits are suddenly a big deal
Restaking ties together stakers, operators, actively validated services (AVSs), slashing rules, and withdrawal paths. That web of obligations makes a clean exit harder than it sounds. Without a clear, irreversible off-ramp, a restaker who thinks they've left could still be on the hook for slashing events. RETIRE aims to remove that ambiguity by making the exit terminal — once you're out, you're really out.
The proposal is still a draft. The community has to figure out whether RETIRE is actually necessary, whether it's safe, and how it would interact with the existing rules that already govern exits and slashing.
What the community is asking
EigenLayer's shift from rapid growth to system design means governance questions are taking center stage. Exits, emissions, slashing, and operator management are all under review. RETIRE is one piece of that puzzle. The debate right now centers on whether an irreversible exit mechanism could create new risks — for example, if a restaker exits right before a slashing event that should have applied to them, or if the framework conflicts with other withdrawal paths.
No timeline has been set for a vote. The DAO is still in the evaluation phase.
From growth mode to governance mode
EigenLayer has spent much of its early life focused on scaling. Now the conversation is turning to the rules of the road. RETIRE is part of a broader push to formalize how the protocol handles exits, penalties, and operator responsibilities. The draft proposal is a signal that the team and the community are thinking about long-term stability — but it's far from a done deal.
The next step is for the EigenLayer DAO to continue its review. Whether RETIRE moves forward, gets revised, or gets shelved will depend on the feedback that comes in over the coming weeks.
