Hyperliquid shipped HIP-4 in early May 2026, bringing binary outcome markets to its platform. The upgrade lets users trade fully collateralized Yes/No contracts on the same on-chain central limit order book that already handles spot and perpetuals. Initial markets covered daily Bitcoin price direction; they've since expanded to macro events like U.S. inflation prints and Federal Reserve decisions.
Inside HIP-4's binary markets
HIP-4 is a primitive baked into HyperCore, the same base layer as Hyperliquid's existing markets — not a separate application. Outcome contracts settle within a fixed range: Yes settles at 1, No at 0. The system uses a merged order book, where buying Yes at price p is identical to selling No at 1-p. That pools liquidity into a single book, a design choice Polymarket also uses. Anyone can create markets via builder contracts, similar to how HIP-3 allowed anyone to launch perpetuals. The first markets were launched by Outcomexyz and Stratium.
Polymarket's shadow
Polymarket's monthly volume climbed roughly sevenfold from late 2025 to early 2026, peaking near $5 billion (per DefiLlama) or roughly $10 billion (Polymarket's own count) in March 2026. Polymarket runs on Polygon, uses Gnosis Conditional Tokens, and settles in USDC. Its order matching is off-chain with on-chain settlement. The two platforms share the merged order book concept, but the real difference is deeper.
Validators vs. oracles
The key differentiator between HIP-4 and Polymarket is who decides the outcome. Polymarket outsources resolution to external oracles — for example, UMA's optimistic oracle. HIP-4 uses Hyperliquid validators to determine whether a contract settled Yes or No. That's a fundamental architectural choice: validator-based resolution vs. an external oracle. Fee structures are secondary. The question is which model traders trust more when the result is disputed.
HIP-4 is live now. The first batch of markets — daily Bitcoin binaries — gave way to macro contracts. Whether validator-based resolution gains traction against Polymarket's established network remains the open question.
