Hyperscale Data, Inc. sold roughly 150.5 Bitcoin last week, trimming its corporate stash to 958.5352 BTC as of August 2. The sale comes after the company had reported holding over 1,106 Bitcoins worth nearly $70 million just a week earlier. Executive Chairman Milton 'Todd' Ault III said the company is using its bitcoin for short-term flexibility to fund data center operations while maintaining a long-term position.
The numbers behind the sale
Hyperscale's remaining 958.5352 BTC were worth over $61 million at current prices. The sale of about 150.5 BTC last week was partially offset by a small purchase: subsidiary Ault Capital Group bought roughly 15 Bitcoin on the open market. The net reduction leaves Hyperscale with a still-substantial war chest, but one that's notably smaller than the 1,106 BTC it held the prior week.
A dual strategy: hodl and spend
Ault described a two-pronged approach. The company plans to maintain a long-term Bitcoin position while using it for short-term flexibility to fund data center operations. Hyperscale also aims to build a $100 million digital asset treasury and achieve full parity between its Bitcoin holdings and its market value. That means the company wants its BTC stack to equal its entire stock market capitalization — an ambitious target that would require either a big Bitcoin rally or a lower stock price.
Following Strategy's playbook — with a twist
Hyperscale follows a strategy similar to Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy), using spare cash to buy Bitcoin. But the timing is tricky. Strategy itself halted its Bitcoin buys and even sold some over the past six weeks to generate cash flow as its stock price fell and Bitcoin traded nearly 50% below its October record. Hyperscale's decision to sell while also buying small amounts suggests it's trying to balance liquidity needs with its long-term accumulation goal.
The next question is whether Hyperscale can keep growing its treasury while also tapping it for operational cash. Ault Capital Group's small open-market purchases show the company is still adding, but the net outflow last week was significant.
