How the Scam Worked
The fake app mimicked Sparrow Wallet's interface and branding. Once users entered their private keys or sent funds to addresses controlled by the scammer, the Bitcoin was gone. The real Sparrow Wallet team had no involvement. They've previously warned about impostors on app stores. This isn't the first time a fake crypto wallet has appeared on Apple's platform, but the $1.8 million figure makes this one of the largest known thefts from such a scheme.
