How the CAS Works

The auction window runs from 3:15 pm to 3:35 pm, with final matching around 3:35 pm. To align with the CAS, the NSE will extend derivatives trading by 10 minutes, moving the market close to 3:40 pm. The CAS applies only to scrips that are eligible for F&O trading. Exchanges will provide a CAS indicator in their data feeds — for example, the BSE scrip-master update will flag affected securities.

Why the Change

The current system uses the last trade from continuous trading to set the official close. That can be noisy — a single large or late order can distort the final price. The auction aims to reward liquidity provision near the close by giving participants a structured window to submit orders. Funds that benchmark to the official close will benefit from a more representative price. Options and futures traders also care about the last print for hedging and daily mark-to-market calculations.
