Bhutan's Royal Government moved 435 Bitcoin into Binance on August 7, 2026, worth around $28 million. The deposit is widely seen as a prelude to a sale — and it breaks a month of inactivity in the kingdom's Bitcoin transfers.
The move continues a pattern that's been building all year. Bhutan has now sold Bitcoin in nearly every month of 2026, with proceeds earmarked for a massive urban development project called Gelephu Mindfulness City.
Steady drip of sales
This isn't a one-off. The deposit on August 7 follows a clear rhythm of disposals: 700 BTC in July, 533 BTC in mid-June, 738 BTC in early June, and two smaller batches of 100 and 90 BTC in May. In March, Bhutan sold around $45 million worth.
Before this week's transfer, the kingdom had gone quiet for about a month. That pause is over now, and the size of this batch — 435 BTC — sits right in the middle of its recent range.
Where the money goes
The sales aren't for general treasury needs. They're funding Gelephu Mindfulness City, a special administrative economic zone spanning more than 2,600 square kilometers. The project is focused on green technology, digital finance, and sustainable urban living.
Bhutan first announced its plan to bankroll the development with Bitcoin sale proceeds at the end of 2025. Since then, the kingdom has been converting its crypto holdings into fiat in regular installments.
The GMC is a flagship initiative for Bhutan — a bid to build a modern, tech-driven city from the ground up in a country better known for hydropower and tourism. Bitcoin, mined in part with the kingdom's abundant renewable energy, has become an unexpected funding stream for that ambition.
What's less clear is how much Bitcoin Bhutan still holds. The government hasn't disclosed its full reserves this year, and this week's transfer suggests the selling isn't done. Given the monthly cadence, another deposit could come before September.
